Wellington is weighing an upgrade to its Snapper ticketing system as the national public transport ticketing rollout runs behind schedule.
Regional officials say the delay leaves the capital with ageing equipment that needs either replacement or an interim upgrade to keep services running reliably.
The national scheme is intended to give passengers a single payment system across the country, including contactless bank card payment, but its staged rollout has slipped.
Any interim investment would need to be written off once the national system arrives, which is the crux of the decision facing decision-makers.
