Public toilet seats have an enduring reputation as a health hazard, but microbiologists say the risk of infection from sitting on one is very low.
Most bacteria found on seats do not survive well on dry surfaces, and intact skin is an effective barrier.
The greater risk in any bathroom comes from hands touching taps, door handles and flush buttons, then touching the face.
Experts say the practical advice is simple: wash hands thoroughly and dry them properly, and stop worrying about the seat.
