The exchange, which came shortly after she became Labour leader, concerned her plans for having children and drew immediate public criticism at the time.
Speaking now, she said the moment illustrated how differently women in politics are questioned, and how much of that goes unremarked upon until someone objects.
She said the reaction from the public in the days that followed had been more instructive than the question itself.
